The spacious family hauler with impressive off-road capabilities and great safety features is on its way. It is the new and improved 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid. Of course, there is also the Highlander model with a traditional V-6 powertrain, but here, we will focus on the hybrid version.
This three-row mid size SUV crossover has been majorly upgraded as the 2017 model year when it has gotten many improvements. Those included new 8-speed automatic and revised engine for the standard version, upgraded tech features and a few cosmetic changes on the outside. So, for the upcoming 2018 version we assume that it will stay pretty much unchanged. However, we might see some new shades for the exterior. The hybrid engine will show excellent fuel efficiency being one of the most economical crossovers on the market. Furthermore, it will bring cozy and spacious cabin and great ride quality for all the passengers. The new Highlander Hybrid will be available in LE, XLE, Limited and Platinum trims.
Its main rivals will be Mazda CX-9 and Chevrolet Traverse.
2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid engine and performance
The 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid will arrive with a hybrid powertrain under its hood. It is a 3.5-liter V-6 in combination with two electric motors and a nickel-metal hydride battery of 45 kWh. All together, they will be able to develop 306 horses and around 300 pound-feet of torque. The hybrid version will appear with all-wheel drive system only.
The standard version will appear with traditional engines too. The one will be a 2.7-liter inline-4 with 185 hp ad 184 lb-ft of torque. The second one will be a 3.5-liter V-6 which will be able to make 295 horses and 263 pound-feet of torque.
As for the fuel efficiency, the Highlander Hybrid will show excellent fuel economy. It gets 30 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway and 29 mpg combined.
Design of exterior and interior
When it comes to exterior, the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid will feature the same design as the current model. Its exterior is very unique and you either like it or not. It features muscular and powerful look. The front end is dominated by elongated headlamps and large grille which give it more aggressive look. It will ride on 12-spoke 18-inch wheels while the higher trims will be available with larger 19-inch ones.
Inside, the 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid is comfortable and spacious offering three rows of seats. It is able to accommodate up to eight passengers. The cargo space is very limited, but with the folded third row, it is much better. The dashboard is covered in soft plastic and features 6.1-inch infotainment system and Bluetooth. The seats are upholstered in cloth but the leather upholstery will be standard in higher trims.
All the models come with a rearview camera, a power driver’s seat, tinted windows etc. The top trims will receive an 8-inch touchscreen, three-zone automatic climate control, navigation, a panoramic moonroof and so on. Moreover, as for the safety, all versions will come with Safety Sense-P package. This includes adaptive cruise control, active lane control, lane departure warning, forward collision warnings, automatic high beams etc.
Release date and price
The 2018 Toyota Highlander Hybrid should appear in showrooms sometime in the end of this year. As for the price, it should start at roughly $38,000 and will go up to $49,000.
