The General Motors Company has launched the second generation of its compact crossover SUV. It is the 2018 GMC Terrain which has brought many interesting changes and upgrades. However, the Company is also announcing the second model year of the new generation and it is going to be the newest 2019 GMC Terrain.
The GMC Terrain is a midsize SUV which offers quiet and cozy cabin, handsome exterior styling and a choice of three engines under its hood. It also rides well and it is good to handle. For the 2018 model year, the General Motors carmaker has given a new design of the exterior making it look sleeker and more attractive. Inside the cabin, there have also been some changes including slightly smaller room for the rear passengers particularly. This is because of the new D2 platform which now underpins the new GMC. Furthermore, the new Terrain now comes lighter for around 350 pounds which will improve general performance of the vehicle and fuel efficiency. As well, the Terrain has arrived with more standard equipment too. However, under the hood, it continues to offer three types of engines.
So, the 2019 GMC Terrain is expected to arrive with some minor but noticeable changes. First of all, it will most likely appear with some new exterior colors and one or two new color combinations inside the cabin. Furthermore, we could also see some upgrades in the equipment. On the other hand, speaking of the engine, there probably won’t be any changes this time. The 2019 model year should arrive in the same trim levels as the outgoing model. Those will include SL, SLE, SLT and the top ranging Denali trims. Its toughest rivals on the market will be Chevy Equinox, Toyota RAV4, Mazda CX-5, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape.
2019 GMC Terrain engines and performances
When it comes to the powertrain, the upcoming 2019 GMC Terrain will use the same engines as the current model. There will be a choice between three engines. The base unit will be a 1.5-liter turbo-4 which will be able to make 170 horses and 203 pound-feet of torque. The next option will be a 2.0-liter turbo-4. This one will have the output of 252 horses and the torque of 260 pound-feet. These engines will pair with a 9-speed automatic gearbox. The last one will be a 1.6-liter turbodiesel-4; it will be able to develop 137 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. This one will be mated to a six-speed automatic gearbox.
The power will be sent to front wheels while the all-wheel-drive system will be available also. The most fuel efficient unit will be a 1.6-liter diesel engine which gets 28/39/32 mpg with front-wheel drive. With AWD it is rated at 28/38/32 mpg in the city/highway/combined.
Design of exterior and interior
As for the exterior design, the 2019 GMC Terrain will continue with the same design of the current model which has been significantly refreshed for the 2018 model year. It has gotten sleeker and more handsome design with the new design of the grille and revised C-shaped LED daytime running lights. On the rear end, there will be restyled LED taillights which will give it bolder appearance. The standard model will ride on 17-inch wheels while the 18-inch wheels will be optional. The top ranging Terrain Denali will use unique 19-inch aluminum wheels.
The interior of the Terrain has been slightly downsized because of the new platform. Precisely, the taller passengers in the rear seats might lack in headroom a bit. But generally, the cabin of the new 2019 GMC Terrain will stay pretty much the same. It is made of quality, soft-touch materials and it is quiet thanks to the standard active noise cancellation. The rear seats can fold down for more cargo room which is generally pretty good. On the center of the dashboard, there will be a 7.0-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.
The standard equipment in the new 2019 GMC Terrain will include air conditioning, a rearview camera, Bluetooth, two USB ports, audio system, power features and so on. The SLE trim will add dual-zone climate control while the blind-spot monitors, satellite radio, heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and many others will be optional. The SLT model will arrive with the larger 8.0-inch touchscreen, heated front seats, roof rails, remote start etc. The top ranging Denali will also include navigation, HD radio, rear parking sensors, audio system with seven speakers and so on.
Release date and price
The 2019 GMC Terrain should arrive sometime in late 2018. When it comes to the price, it should be similar to the one of the current model which starts at around $25.000.
