Kia Niro is a compact wagon SUV which entered the market with a hybrid engine in 2016, in addition to the traditional engines. However, the 2018 model year now offers hybrid and plug-in hybrid engines only. There are several trims available. The base FE, the mid trim levels LX and EX, and the top-ranging Touring versions are offered with a hybrid system. The plug-in hybrid is available in LX, EX, and EX Premium. On the other hand, the carmaker has announced an all-electric version which is set to enter the market as the 2019 Kia Niro.
The upcoming Niro EV Concept has recently been presented at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show and it is one of the brand’s 16 planned electric cars which should go on sale by the year of 2025. The manufacturer promises the range of around 238 miles for the newest Niro while its exterior styling shouldn’t change from the current model. However, the inside of the new Kia will be revised looking more simple but modern. Furthermore, the technology will definitively be upgraded with advanced safety features.
2019 Kia Niro powertrain
For the 2018 model year, the Kia Niro comes with a hybrid and a plug-in hybrid engines. However, the 2019 Kia Niro will appear for the first time as an all-electric version. So, to start with familiar units: the hybrid engine is a combination of a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder unit and an electric motor. The first unit is able to make 104 hp and 109 lb-ft of torque while an electric motor has the output of 43 horses and 125 pound-feet of torque. All together they are able to make 139 hp and 195 pound-feet of torque. This unit pairs with a 6-speed dual-clutch gearbox.
The next is a plug-in hybrid version. This one gets the power from the same 1.6-liter 4-cylinder, an electric motor which is stronger and a lithium-ion battery. The output is the same as in the hybrid variant, but the PHEV can provide an all-electric range of around 26 miles.
As for the newest Niro EV, it will feature an electric motor and a lithium-ion battery of 64 kWh. This unit will provide the range of up to 238 miles.
External appearance and interior design
The 2019 Kia Niro will keep the familiar shape and design of its predecessor. It looks handsome, attractive and sleek. The front end is characterized by swept-back headlights, rounded hood, and thin mesh grille. The 16-inch alloy wheels are standard but the larger 18-inch alloys are also available.
The Kia Niro is known for its comfortable, sufficiently spacious and functional cabin. It seats five and for a vehicle of that size, the cargo space is rather good. Depending on a trim level, the Niro is available with a 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreens with the infotainment system. All the versions include a rearview camera, LED headlights, dual-zone climate control, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, split folding rear seats and so on. However, the 2019 Kia Niro will offer more safety systems including self-driving technology.
Release date and pricing
The 2019 Kia Niro should arrive early next year. Its price is in a range from roughly $28,900 and goes up to $32,500. An electric version of this model will definitively be much higher.
