The Kia Sportage represents one of the top ranking vehicles in the compact SUV class. It stands out from crowded SUV market by its very handsome styling, excellent handling, and quality interior. It stands below the larger Sorento model and it comes with front- and all-wheel-drive configurations. The carmaker has just presented the 2018 Kia Sorento which has arrived with minimal changes compared to the 2017 model year. However, the Kia manufacturer is also preparing the newest version of this model which will go on sale as the 2019 Kia Sportage.
The Kia Sportage is generally very handsome crossover SUV which is able to welcome up to five passengers comfortably. It offers quality and well-designed cabin and a wide list of modern tech features. However, compared to its key competitors, its cargo space is a bit limited. Under the hood, it features a speedy 4-cylinder unit which unfortunately is not fuel efficient at all. Furthermore, it is easy to handle and provides a smooth ride.
The Kia Sportage has been fully redesigned for 2017 year when it has gotten a new exterior design. The changes included a new front end with a revised grille. It has grown in size a bit with an extended wheelbase. Because of the larger dimensions, the Sportage now provides more space inside the cabin which makes it more comfortable. The cabin has also been revised with more quality materials. The steering has also been improved. In the tech department, the Kia has gained the latest UVO infotainment system and more safety systems.
So, since it has been completely refreshed for 2017, the 2018 Sportage has arrived with some minor but noticeable adjustments. Those are slightly refreshed front fascia and upgraded safety features in the lower trim levels. For the newest version, the 2019 Kia Sportage, there probably won’t be any changes since it is fresh and very well equipped. It will most likely be offered in the same trim levels as the current model. Those are LX, EX and SX Turbo versions. It will compete against Ford Escape, Subaru Forester, Hyundai Tucson, Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5.
2019 Kia Sportage engine and performance
Under the hood of the 2019 Kia Sportage should be placed the same engine as in the current model. There will be two types of engines depending on a trim level. So, the LX and EX trims will be powered by a 2.4-liter inline-4 which is able to produce 181 horsepower and 175 pound-feet of torque. The SX trim will use a 2.0-liter inline-4 with a turbocharger which has the output of 240 hp (237 hp with AWD) and the torque of 260 pound-feet. Both engines will pair with a 6-speed automatic gearbox. However, there will be a choice between front-wheel and all-wheel drive configurations.
As for the fuel economy, the base trims will get 23/30/26 mpg with FWD while with all-wheel drive, it gets 21/25/23 mpg. The second option is rated at 21 mpg in the city, 26 mpg on the highway and 23 mpg combined with front-wheel drive. With all-wheel drive, it is estimated to be 20/23/21 mpg in the city/highway/combined.
Design of exterior and interior
When it comes to exterior, the Sportage model has been fully refreshed last year, so for the 2019 Kia Sportage, we don’t expect any changes. The Sportage model looks very handsome and attractive; it rides on the standard 18-inch wheels while the larger 19-inch alloys will be standard on the SX Turbo trim.
The interior of the 2019 Kia Sportage is spacious enough to accommodate up to five passengers comfortably. There are plenty of head and knee room for all the occupants. The driver’s seat is also a six-way adjustable. The cargo space provides the room of 31 cubic feet. The dashboard will get a standard 5.0-inch touchscreen with the infotainment system. However, the larger 7.0-inch touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity will be available also.
As for the equipment, it comes standard with power windows and locks, air conditioning, a rearview camera, six airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control. The will also be two optional packages. The Popular package will add dual-zone automatic climate control, larger display, roof rails, heated front seats and so on. The Technology packages will include rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams, emergency braking, lane departure warning and power folding side mirrors.
Release date and price
The release date of the upcoming 2019 Kia Sportage is unavailable at the moment. We assume that it will get the same pricing of the 2018 model which is around $23,600 for the base version.
