The Toyota Highlander had been majorly refreshed as the 2017 model year, so the 2018 model hasn’t changed much. However, the company is already announcing the all-new 2019 Toyota Highlander. Unfortunately, there isn’t much information about the improvements which we can expect from the newest Highlander but we believe that it won’t bring some significant changes since it is still fresh.
The Toyota Highlander is a three-row crossover SUV which is very spacious and cozy but at the same time safe and secure vehicle which might be a good choice for families. It features a strong V-6 unit under its hood but there is also a hybrid version. The hybrid version will represent one of the most fuel-efficient crossovers in its segment. As well, the Highlander is a good choice either for city drive so as the off-road driving. In the tech department, the Highlander features the most modern safety technology in its class.
The 2018 Toyota Highlander has already been presented to the world but it has arrived pretty much unchanged. The 2017 model has brought the major overhaul, which will probably be carried over with the 2019 Toyota Highlander as well. Its main rivals on the market will be Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, Honda Pilot, Volkswagen Atlas and Chevy Traverse. Furthermore, the 2019 Toyota Highlander will most likely arrive in the same trim levels as before. Those will include LE, LE Plus, SE, XLE, Limited and Limited Platinum.
2019 Toyota Highlander engines and performances
When it comes to the engine, the 2019 Toyota Highlander should arrive with the same units which power the outgoing model. There will be three types of engines including inline-4, V-6, and hybrid options. So, the base model will arrive with a 2.4-liter inline-4 which is able to make 185 horses and 184 pound-feet of torque. It will pair with a 6-speed automatic gearbox and the front-wheel-drive configuration will be standard. However, this unit will only will available with the base Highlander.
The higher trims will be available with an optional 3.5-liter V-6 engine. This one will be able to generate 295 hp and the torque of 236 pound-feet. This unit will be mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. There will be a choice between front- and all-wheel-drive configurations.
The third option will be a hybrid. This unit will represent a combination of the same 3.5-liter V-6 and two electric motors. There will also be a nickel-metal hydride battery of 45 kWh. The total output of this unit will be 306 horsepower.
As for the fuel efficiency, the V-6 engine with all-wheel drive gets 20/26/22 mpg. With FWD, it gets 21/27/23 mpg. The inline-4 is rated at 20 mpg in the city, 24 on the highway and 22 combined. The hybrid engine will be the most fuel efficient and it is estimated to be 30/28/29/ mpg in the city/highway/combined.
Design of exterior and interior
Speaking of the exterior, the 2017 model year has been refreshed, but visually it has kept the overall look without any major changes. We expect the same for the 2019 Toyota Highlander. The massive black grille dominates the front fascia so as a pair of elongated headlamps which give it a bit aggressive appearance. The standard model will ride on the 18-inch alloy wheels while the higher trims will get 19-inch alloys.
When it comes to interior, the 2019 Toyota Highlander will offer a spacious cabin with an ability to accommodate up to eight passengers in three rows of seats. The front seats are comfortable and supportive; the driver’s is also power-adjustable. However, we cannot say the same for the second and the third row which is tight and suitable for children only. The cargo space is very small with 14 cubic feet of space. However, it can be increased to 42 cubes if you fold the third row.
The dashboard will feature a standard 6.1-inch touchscreen with the infotainment system. However, the higher trims will arrive with the larger 8.0-inch display. As for the equipment, it will come standard with tinted windows, Bluetooth, a rearview camera. A 4.2-inch LCD screen, cloth upholstery etc. The mid-range trims will add navigation, three-zone climate control, leatherette and cloth upholstery and so on. The top trims will get a JBL audio system, a panoramic moonroof, heated steering wheel and many other more. The Toyota Safety Sense-P package will be standard too and will include active lane control, automatic high beams, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control and forward collision warning.
Release date and price
It is still not confirmed when the carmaker will present its newest 2019 Toyota Highlander. The price should be similar to the one of the current model and it starts at around $31,000.
