2019 Volvo XC40: Price, Electric, Review

The Swedish car maker has announced its all new compact crossover SUV to join the XC lineup as the smallest model. It is the 2019 Volvo XC40. This model will also represent the brand’s first electric vehicle. As well, it will ride on the entirely new platform. Visually, the upcoming XC40 will borrow some design cues from its bigger siblings, but it will of course feature some unique details. Under the hood, the newest Volvo will get several powertrains including 4-cylinders, plug-in hybrid and an electric motor at some point in future. However, not all the engines will be available for all the markets. Inside the cabin, there will be plenty of infotainment and safety features too.

The main competitors of the XC40 will be BMW X1, MINI Cooper Countryman, Jeep Compass and Audi Q3.

2019 Volvo XC40 engines and performances

Under the hood of the 2019 Volvo XC40 will be placed several types of drivetrains. The base version will be a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder unit with standard all-wheel drive system and Drive-E technology. This unit will, most likely, combine supercharging and turbocharging and the total output is expected to be around 250 horsepower. The engine will pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission. On the other hand, the XC40 will be also available with front-wheel drive configuration which is going to be a bit expensive.

Furthermore, the car maker will also offer an inline-3 engine. As well, other engines will include a plug-in hybrid and there should also be an all-electric version eventually.

Design of exterior and interior

Unlike the larger XC60 and XC90, the upcoming 2019 Volvo XC40 will ride on the new platform. It is the new CMA-Compact Modular Architecture which will underpin compact vehicles all around the world.  When it comes to exterior design, the new Volvo will look very similar to the XC60 and XC90 models. The whole body will feature angular lines. The front end is dominated by the wide grille and well-known LED headlamps. As well, the rear end will also receive similar design of the taillights like in the rest of the XC lineup. The new Volvo will ride on the large wheels which will make it look more aggressive.

2019 Volvo XC40 rear

Inside the 2019 Volvo XC40, the car maker will offer sufficiently spacious cabin. There will be flexible rear seat and plenty of space for storage such as phones, bags and bottles. The center console is wide and features a large 9.0-inch touchscreen in the dashboard and standard digital instrument cluster. The Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will be standard as well. The infotainment system will also support stereo, hands-free calling, Bluetooth and navigation.

Speaking of the safety, it will be provided with airbags, lane keeping technologies, adaptive cruise control, cameras, cross-traffic detection, forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. The Volvo’s semi-autonomous drive will be available too.

Release date and price

The 2019 Volvo XC40 should arrive sometime during next year, most likely in the summer of 2018. As for the price, it should start at around $35,000.
