The XC90 model made the Volvo brand a strong rival among other luxury SUV manufacturers. The XC90 is the Swedish flagship SUV which we must admit is absolutely amazing. The 2018 Volvo XC90 has already been presented to the world and compared with the previous model, it has gotten just some minor upgrades. Furthermore, the carmaker is also working on the newest version of this model which should enter the showrooms as the 2019 Volvo XC90.
The Volvo XC90 is a full-size SUV which offers quality and luxurious cabin which, we must admit, is one of the best-looking in its class. The infotainment system is pretty good, but perhaps it could be a bit easier to use. Despite that, the XC90 comes with latest modern safety features and since there is a wide choice of trim levels, it offers plenty of advanced equipment. Furthermore, there are several engines to choose from among which, a plug-in hybrid could be the best one although is a bit pricey.
The 2018 XC90 has arrived pretty much unchanged except some upgrades in the equipment. Precisely, there are more standard features this time including the Pilot Assist semi-autonomous drive system, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitors and so on. As well, there will be Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The carmaker has also added the new design of the 21-inch wheels, and optional heated front seats and heated steering wheel.
On the other hand, although there isn’t precise information about the newest 2019 Volvo XC90, we believe that it won’t arrive with some major changes also since it is still fresh and competitive. It will continue with the same trim options as the current model. Those include Momentum, R-Design, Inscription and Excellence.
The XC90’s main rivals will be Audi Q7, Mazda CX-9, BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz GLE Class, and Acura MDX.
2019 Volvo XC90 engines and performances
The 2019 Volvo XC90 will most likely get the same engines as the outgoing model. There will be three types of engine configurations to choose from, the base unit for all of them will be a 2.0-liter turbo-4.
So, the base model will arrive with a T5 configuration powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-4 unit which will be able to produce 250 horses and 258 pound-feet of torque. The front-wheel-drive will be standard while the all-wheel-drive configuration will be optional.
The more powerful will be a 2.0-liter inline-4 turbocharged T6 powertrain. This one will be able to generate 316 hp and the torque of 295 pound-feet. The all-wheel drive is standard for this configuration.
The last one is a plug-in hybrid T8 powertrain which will combine the same 2.0-liter turbo-4 supercharged engine, electric motors and a lithium-ion battery of 10.4 kWh. All together, they will have the output of 400 horsepower. It will provide an all-electric range of up to 19 miles. All the engines will pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission.
As for the fuel economy, the T5 with AWD is rated at 22 mpg in the city, 28 mpg on the highway and 24 mpg combined. The T6 is rated at 20/27/23 mpg while the T8 will be the most fuel-efficient of all. It is estimated to be 29 mpg combined.
Design of exterior and interior
There is no need to say anything about the design of the XC90 since we are familiar with its very handsome and attractive styling. The latest 2019 Volvo XC90 might see some small adjustments, but we will know more after the brand’s official announcement. The base model will ride on 18-inch wheels while the larger 20- and 21-inch ones will be available in higher trims.
The interior of the 2019 Volvo XC90 will be absolutely stunning with impressive materials and advanced tech features. It is able to welcome up to seven passengers in three rows of seats. The front ones are extremely cozy while the second and the third-row seats are also suitable for adults. The dashboard will receive a 9.0-inch infotainment touchscreen with standard Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.
As for the equipment, the base Momentum comes with four-zone climate control, synthetic leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, power adjustable front seats etc. The R-Design trim will add black grille, heated front seats, 20-inch wheels and a sportier steering wheel. The Inscription model will include Nappa leather upholstery, upgraded audio, active noise cancellation, and real wood surfaces. Finally, the Excellence model will get heated and cooled front and second row of seats, Bowers & Wilkins premium audio, a panoramic moonroof, and air suspension.
Release date and price
The Swedish carmaker still hasn’t revealed the exact date of the arrival of the new 2019 Volvo XC90. The starting price of the current model is around $46,900 and we assume that it will be similar to the 2019 model year.
